To run at peak efficiency and maximize diesel output, American refiners must continually blend light domestic shale oil with imported heavy sour barrels—largely from Canadian oil sands via rail and pipeline, or maritime shipments from Latin America. When global supply chains for heavy crude constrict due to geopolitical conflict, domestic refiners cannot simply replace those heavy molecules with domestic frack oil to produce more diesel.
